Orphans

NO PLACE TO CALL HOME

Every 2.2 seconds, an orphan ages out of the system at age 16.  Orphans have no family to belong to and no place to call home.

An orphanage is a residential childcare facility that is intended to care for children from the time of their admission until their maturity or emancipation.  An orphanage must be an acceptable or a superior substitute for the children’s families.  War, crisis and other circumstances in developing countries affect the lives of orphans.  Governmental support is a major part of a child’s care in orphanages, meeting their basic needs, and they can interact with adults.  Many orphanages provide a better environment than the children’s biological families, but individualised nurturing through a loving and responsible family can be missing.  Foster care for orphans needs structure with quality, and more programs throughout the world.  Adding family characteristics to the institutional life of orphanages and improving the living conditions of the orphaned children who are living with a foster family seem to be the two most appropriate way to take care of orphans.  These methods improve children’s well-being.  Foster parents adopt approximately 60% of children each year.

According to data released in 2003, as many as eight million boys and girls live in institutional care worldwide.  HIV/AIDS has orphaned 15 million children.  There are between 143 million and 210 million orphans worldwide.  Every day, 5,760 more children become orphans, annual adoptions are approximately 250,000, and 38,493 orphans age out each day.  Studies have shown that 10% to 15% of these children commit suicide before age 18, 60 % of the girls become prostitutes, and 70% of the boys become hardened criminals.  The My Wow Factor Charity partners with nonprofit organisations that support project activities designed to enable these orphanage beneficiaries to offer children comfort, hope, and future.  Thank you.
