Sanitation

A GENERATIONAL CHANGE BY 2025

Approximately 2.5 BILLION people globally do not have access to improved sanitation facilities.  The biggest problems occur in populations in developing countries due to the lack of priority given to sanitation services, a lack of financial resources, poor hygiene behaviours, and inadequate sanitation in public places, including hospitals, health centres, and schools.

The projects detailed below aim to prevent illnesses spread by this sanitation crisis.  Cleanliness is crucial to diarrhoea prevention, which is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old.  There is an estimated 33% reduction in diarrhoea cases when sanitation facilities are improved and a more than 40% reduction from using soap.  More financing can solve the sanitation crisis, target the poorest communities, and better plan for the sustainable provision of water.  These preventable illnesses heavily overburden health systems.  More than half of hospital beds in sub-Saharan Africa are for patients suffering from sanitation and water related diseases.

On 21 March 2013, the United Nations Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson called for urgent action to end the crisis of 2.5 billion people living without basic sanitation by 2025.  The Millennium Development Goal’s target has helped raise the profile of the global sanitation crisis.  Approximately 1.8 billion people have gained access to improved sanitation since 1990.  Our global communities can deliver a generational change by 2025.  Talking about this problem and donating to sanitation projects helps communities gain access to toilets so that there can be more defecation-free communities.  Women and girls can have safe, private bathrooms, and they can stay in school, which we know can increase their future earnings and help break the cycle of poverty.  Together, we can change one community at a time.  Thank you.
